How to use face oils in your daily skincare routine

Face oils are a simple addition to any skincare regimen. You can apply face oils at any time, but due to their texture, you may wish to start by implementing them into your nighttime regimen. Ensure they are applied after the use of any water-based serums and before the application of creams and heavier moisturizers.

Why should you use face oils?
Face oils are packed with natural plant-based ingredients like antioxidants, essential fatty acids, and vitamins that work to nourish, hydrate, and balance your skin. While they may seem intimidating for oily or acne-prone skin, face oils can actually help regulate sebum production and lock in moisture without causing breakouts when chosen properly.

Depending on the ingredients, face oils can:
Hydrate: They help lock in moisture, preventing your skin from becoming dry or flaky.
Nourish: Face oils provide essential nutrients, helping to soothe and restore the skin’s natural barrier.
Balance: They can regulate oil production, preventing excess oiliness or dehydration.
Fight Signs of Ageing: Many face oils contain antioxidants that help protect the skin from free radical damage, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Choosing the right face oil for your skin type:

Face oils come in a variety of formulations, so it’s important to choose one that’s best suited to your skin type.

For Dry Skin: Look for oils rich in fatty acids, like argan oil, rosehip oil, or marula oil. These oils help deeply hydrate and replenish the skin.
For Oily or Acne-Prone Skin: You might be wary of oils if you have oily or acne-prone skin, but lightweight oils like jojoba oil or grape seed oil can help balance sebum production. These oils are non-comedogenic (meaning they won’t clog pores) and can reduce breakouts.
For Sensitive Skin: If your skin is prone to irritation, choose oils like chamomile or calendula. These oils have soothing properties and can calm inflammation.
For Ageing Skin: To fight the visible signs of ageing, look for oils rich in antioxidants like rosehip oil, pomegranate oil, or hippophae oil. These oils can help with collagen production and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

How Often Should You Use Face Oil?
The frequency with which you use face oil depends on your skin’s needs and how your skin responds to it. For most people, using face oil once a day—either in the morning or at night—will suffice. If you have dry skin, you may want to use it twice a day for extra hydration. If your skin is on the oilier side, you can stick to a once-a-day application in the evening.
